Did Nick Cave Get the 'Stache Book OR How I Confused Nick Cave

Because I am lame, I never got around to telling you guys this OVER A YEAR AGO. If you'll recall, last November 27th, I was able to hand Grinderbunny to Nick after a song. Grinderbunny has been keeping us all updated on his Facebook and Twitter. He's an odd bunny, that one.

Anyway, now that over a year has passed, I am relatively calm enough to inform you all that I was fortunate enough to meet Nick after the show. Basically, meeting him went like this:

MY HUSBAND: It's freezing. He is never coming out. Let's go.
ME: NO! I have to TRY to meet him so I can ask him about the moustache book*!

To summarize the encounter (I TYPED UP A SIXTY PAGE CONCERT "SUMMARY," so this is VERY truncated, haha), Martyn left right away, we met Warren, who was VERY nice and signed our set list, then Nick came out eventually and met the approximately 10 of us who were waiting (we didn't stick around for Jim, unfortunately, because we were freezing). He was very rushed, but very nice, as you'll see. I only spent about 90 seconds in his presence, and to give you all something to laugh at, here's basically how those 90 seconds went:

[I stand holding The Puppy Phenomenon picture stupidly as people rush to Nick; I tell myself, "GO OVER THERE, YOU IDIOT!"]

ME: I’m the girl who gave you the Grinderbunny.

NICK CAVE: Oh, yeah? What happened to that?

[EVERYONE TALKING TO NICK AT ONCE; I'M TOTALLY IN DREAM-MODE. I TRY TELLING HIM IT'S BY JIM'S DRUMS BUT EVERYONE IS TALKING AT ONCE.]

ME: I have to have you sign the cutest picture of you ever.
[NICK CAVE talks to various people while signing the puppy photo.]

ME: I have to ask you…did you ever get a book of girls with moustaches?

[NICK LOOKS AT ME...FURROWS HIS BROWS...AND LOOKS COMPLETELY CONFUSED. He basically made the >8-/ face at me. He looked both adorable and hilarious at the same time.]

NICK [sounding unsure and completely confused]: Noo..?

ME: Awwww, lame. [I SAID, "AWWW, LAME"...THAT IS LAME!]

NOTE: He may have, in fact, gotten the 'stache book and just been bloody confused. Like my friend Laura said, if the crowd of people weren't confusing enough, he may have been thinking I meant a published book, not some handmade thing. No matter.

[My husband apparently handed the set list we got to Nick to sign, but in my memory, Nick Cave just grabbed it from me automatically and signed it. I’ll trust my husband’s memory, though.]

[I started arguing with myself about whether I should say what I really want to say or not…whether it will sound too creepy and decide I MEAN IT and I am NOT creepy (like some girl there who said the same thing and got a very curt "thanks" from Nick).]

ME: I love you so much.

NICK CAVE: Aw, that’s very sweet of you to say.

NOTE: I seriously debated telling him I love him ALL DAY. I did NOT want to sound stalkerish or creepy, but I figured I meant it in a genuine, "I love and appreciate you" way and HOPED he would know I meant it that way. He sounded so sincerely touched when he said, "aw, that's very sweet of you," that I know he got that I meant it in a genuine way. Plus, the fact that some random chick said it all lustily after I did and he just said, "thanks" in THE most curt way EVER reassures me that he could TELL I meant it. He meets wannabe groupies all the time, so he can tell the bloody difference. Anywho...

ME: Um…can we get a picture with you?

NICK CAVE: Yeah, yeah, alright. [NOTE: This only looks like an eyerolling statement in print; he said it really nicely, even though this whole time he is still creeping closer to leave.]

[My husband and I get on either side of Mr. Cave, I put my arm around him, and my husband takes the picture.]

[NICK CAVE goes to leave, almost to the vehicle, when my husband shows me the picture.]

WOW. AWESOME. I meet my fucking idol basically and I can almost recognize the outline of his head**. GREAT. FAAAAAANTASTIC. That’s one to show the kids. Oh, well, at least I met him at all.

NO WAIT, THE WORST HE CAN SAY IS NO, RIGHT?! I decide it’s true, the worst he can say is no, so I kind of poke/rub his back to calm him so he doesn't kill me. I mean, he's Nick Cave, and I was convinced he was about to curse me with the Glare of Cave and/or rip my heart out and stomp on it with his oh-so-pointy boots.

I timidly ask in a scared shitless voice, “Nick?” and he turns around and sees me standing there, and I want to cry and feel like SUCH A FUCKING JERK, but I start moving out of the way so he can say “no,” and leave.

However, when I say, “our flash didn’t go off…I’m so sorry…could we get another picture?” HE SAID, “it’s alright” AND PUT HIS ARM AROUND ME AND POSED AGAIN. THAT IS THE NICEST THING IN THE ENTIRE FREAKING WORLD. He could have said no…he was IN SUCH A RUSH. But he said yes.

NOTE: Yeah, he's not looking at the camera. He was talking to some guy and had already posed with me once. I was TERRIFIED asking for another picture. HE'S NICK CAVE. I thought he might, like, GLARE ME TO DEATH or something. But no...

*Okay, so if you all took part in the moustache book, you'll know what that's all about. I promised countless people that, if I did meet Nick, I would TRY to get the courage to ask him about it. Anyway...

Neubauten: A Brief Introduction

I know this isn't Nick, but dammit, Blixa is Nick-related (and I can post what I want)! It took me until this past year to finally become an Einsturzende Neubauten fan. I thought they were just WHITE NOISE before, and now they're one of my favorite bands EVER.

I am putting several Neubauten songs here that I think are less abrasive, more accessible, and helped warp me into become a full-fledged Neubautenite. I tried to go with non-live performances because they tend to be, shall I say, more experimental and harder to get into at first.

I dedicate this post to Laura.

01. "Weil Weil Weil," from Alles Wieder Offen, is the first song of EN's that clicked with me. I don't want your first listen of it to be some crappy live performance, so here's just the song.

02. "Yu-Gung (Futter Mein Ego)," from Halber Mensch. Second song of theirs I really loved, and the video is nature at its weirdest and most disturbingly beautiful.

03. "Stella Maris," from Ende Neu, with Meret Becker, is a gorgeous song, gorgeous video, AND has enough behatted Blixa for all you hat fetishists out there.

04. "Alles Wieder Offen," from Alles Wieder Offen. I could not even tell you why, other than it's just a great song, but I listen to this ALL. THE. TIME. When I walk particularly...and you should see me walking up or down steps to it. It's like some weird German Michael Jackson thing with a little Roger Rabbit thrown in.

05. "Prolog" and "Feurio!" from Haus der Luge. Haus der Luge, along with Alles Wieder Offen, is a great place to start. Alles is the least abrasive and is what made me a fan, and Haus is trademark Neubauten, but way easier on the ears than some of their stuff. A word of caution: DO NOT DO WHAT I DID AND START WITH KOLLAPS. You will hate it. Anyway...Even if you have no bloody clue what he's saying (EN's albums do come with English translations), you have to admit, this sounds fucking fantastic. And "Feurio!" is just...GAAAAAAAAH, SUCCUMB TO IT, MY MINIONS! Also, fear the Bargeld trying-not-to-be-a-mullet-but-ohhhhh-it-is-one-anyway!

06. "MoDiMiDoFrSaSo" from Fuenf Auf Der Nach Oben.... In case you forget your days of the week, or just want to hear a great song. Let it assail your ears, drive you insane, and make you looooove it.

07. "Z.N.S.," from Halber Mensch. Okay, now...this might fucking terrify you (it did me), but part of what made me succumb and become an EN fan was the following video. It's weird as hell...but mostly, I admit...it was The Beauty That Is Snapping Blixa Bargeld. I had NO IDEA what he used to look like, but until I saw this, he was permanently weird hat-wearing, "fluffy" Blixa. So...I was intrigued...

08. "Haus der Luge" from Haus der Luge. Seriously, this is a great album to start with, and just a fabulous album in general. Plus, the cover has a drawing of an ejaculating horse on it, so...hey. Freak out the folks!

BONUS: The song that made Laura a fan:

If you don't like Neubauten, I do understand. I never thought I would, but the above, along with the influence of Laura and my other friend, Colin, really made me appreciate the Blixster.

If nothing else, here is one of the songs from Blixa's other project, ANBB, in which he meows like a demonically possessed cat in heat. You're welcome.

First of all, Grinderman's "Heathen Child" has been nominated as song of the year HERE, so be sure to vote for them! You have to vote for each category, and I don't know most of the other artists, but anything for Grinderman to get more votes. :)

Money and Run: Hologram Nick

If some of you didn't know, Nick is featured on a track from the new UNKLE EP (Only the Lonely). The song is called "Money and Run," and it's a pretty unique collaboration. It's not my usual style of music, but after falling in love with this song, I gotta say, I'm kinda liking UNKLE.

Anyway, check out this UNKLE performance of the song including a huge hologram of Mr. Cave. Yep. You read that right.

In other news...I FINALLY LOVE JUNKYARD. That's been the ONE album I've never fully succumbed to, and yesterday, the mood was right or something (listening to PiL beforehand may have helped). I. Smudge Opening & NYT Style

Two things. First of all, by now, I'm assuming most of you know about Polly Borland's latest book, Smudge. If not, refer to my previous post. Anyway, I found a site with some photos from the opening of the Smudge showing at the Other Criteria gallery in London.

The next bit of news is that there is a rather dashing photo of Mr. Cave in the latest issue of The New York Times Style magazine. Apparently there are two covers, because mine has THIS AS MY COVER, so just know that it has the same picture of Nick inside that the Nick cover version does. The BETTER version (possibly the international version), features Nick himself on the cover looking very much like, well, himself. The inside photo of him is included in a series of male rockers, such as Iggy Pop, Dave Gahan, Lou Reed, and others, all wearing suits.

Polly Borland's Smudge

Get ready to be confused and amused...and possibly terrified.

Laura sent me an email containing the following bit of news. Said email was called, quite intriguingly, "WHAT THE NICK CAVE FUCKING HELL?!" Laura is very well-spoken, I assure you.

ANYWAY, photographer Polly Borland has a new book (out NOW!) entitled Smudge. This book contains a number of portraits of people in amorphous leotards/full body nylon/etc. Random ping pong balls are stuffed down their leotards, wigs are utilized to hide the identities of those posing, and it is just bizarre. Nick wrote the introduction to the book (which is VERY amusing and involves him once again talking about "rouged nipples" and just making the whole weird thing sound strangely sexy) AND...

Well, guess who posed for some of the pictures? THESE ARE ALL NICK.

Other Characters Like Euchrid

This is something I've been wanting to start a list of for awhile. I've noticed, in my literary endeavors, that there are a number of Euchrid Eucrow*-esque characters lurking about.

What, exactly, aside from the Euchrid, constitutes a character as being similar to Euchrid? Basically, someone gone in the head a bit, those with feelings that they are a martyr of some sort, characters that obsessively collect weird things like human hair and tin cans, etc. If you've read And the Ass Saw the Angel, you will know a similar character in other works.

What follows is my list of "hey! That character makes me think of Euchrid!" to date. I urge you to read these books, especially if you liked ATASTA, as they're all pretty damned awesome.

Child of God by Cormac McCarthy

My friend Laura and I are convinced that Nick had to have been influenced by this book in some way; the similarities are striking, really. McCarthy in general is amazing, and this book is the first of his I read, and it's absolutely brilliant. If you liked ATASTA in any way, I guarantee you will also enjoy this book.

"Child of God tells the story of Lester Ballard, a dispossessed, violent man whom the narrator describes as "a child of God much like yourself perhaps." Ballard's life is a disastrous attempt to exist outside the social order. Successively deprived of parents and homes and with few other ties, Ballard descends literally and figuratively to the level of a cave dweller as he falls deeper into crime and degradation."

Lord of the Barnyard by Tristan Egolf

Late author Tristan Egolf starts his book with a Nick Cave quote, which is one clue this book may be worth a read. The style quickly struck me as being similar (without being a rip-off) of Cave's writing style in ATASTA, and the main character is a social outcast in a town of churchgoers.

"John Kaltenbrunner, an only child, is born on the heels of his father's death. At an unusually early age, the boy shows a flair for farming and a desire to be left alone, two things that make people pick on him in increasingly vicious ways. John's life plan is to drop out of school when he hits 16 and mind his own business. But he loses everything, alienates everyone, and through a series of increasingly outrageous mishaps winds up serving three years work-release felony time on a river barge. When he comes home to Baker, no one recognizes him...The streets don't stay that way for long as the tale truly turns on the garbage strike organized by John and his gang of fellow misfits. As a result, Baker comes apart at the seams and all the citizenry reveal their true natures."

Tideland by Mitch Cullin

This book was made into a film by Terry Gilliam, and it's probably one of the most beautifully disturbing books I've ever read. I would suggest reading the book first, but really, both the book and the film are twisted enough to each stand alone.

This time, the Euchrid-like character is not the protagonist. The main character is a little girl whose mother and father are drug addicts (to the point where they teach her how to cook their heroin and fill syringes for them). After her mother dies, she and her father move to an abandoned farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. The girl's only friends are her decapitated doll heads. She eventually meets a ghost-like woman and her brother, Dickens (that'd be the Euchrid character). Dickens wears a ratty captain's hat and jacket, collects random baubles in his hovel made of branches, leaves, and trash, and has a mental disability brought on by a surgery he had to relieve his epilepsy. Oh, and he thinks his hovel of branches and trash is a submarine, and that the local train is a giant shark.

Seriously, there are some FUCKED UP parts to this book/film. You HAVE to see and/or read this...I am not kidding. It is really unique, twisted, depressing, beautiful, and just shows how a child would view things like death, sex, and drugs. Be prepared to say, "WHAT THE FUCK?!" at least twice.

The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks

This book is very short, but very satisfying. VERY good book. There's more to it than what is described below, but to divulge anything more would be to let out bits of the plot you shouldn't know going into it. READ IT. It'll take you maybe four hours, and then you'll have another book to add to your "WTF" list.

Narrator Frank Cauldhame is by his own admission a naughty boy who runs around the isolated island killing bunnies and wreaking havoc. He does boyish stuff like blowing things up and having private wars using any living creature he can find...He has grandiose ideas of secret powers that he can usually control, but he admits that sometimes these powers are even beyond his command. He has a far-fetched imagination, creating a fantasy world where everything has dark names like his catapult, “the black destroyer,” and areas of the island called “sacrifice poles,” “snake park,” and “bomb circle.” The title of the book comes from the “wasp factory” he created in order to predict the future..."

Nick appeared on the Triple J radio show with The Doctor (not Who) today. If you missed it (I certainly did), you can check out the podcast and/or download the mp3 of the show at the link below. It's a very good, lengthy interview, in which Nick talks about Amanda Palmer's version of "The Ship Song," getting an honorary doctorate, his tanned nipples(?!), and...if you're not interested yet...haha.

Doctor: Is it often that you get asked to show people your tits, uh, during a set?

Nick: Uh, no.

Doctor: I think people were shocked to realize that...

Nick: That I have nipples.

On the Road with Grinderman: Spin Article

Spin magazine has, for once, a really great article up on its site. No, I mean, really good and entertaining. It's an article all about what it was like for a guy to go touring with Grinderman.

The very first picture of Nick scares me because he looks like Billy Bob Thornton, post-facelift. I think it's just a bad picture. The boa picture is amazing, and it's not the pink one!

Nick goes shopping for magic tricks, almost barfs over chicken gizzards, Warren keeps vomiting or having diarrhea...no, seriously, that's just the first couple pages. OH, and the thing about getting a dog = adorable and hilarious.

It's long, but DEFINITELY worth the read for such gems as:

"The three of them begin ordering for the table: skewers of chicken hearts and gizzards, beef tongue, quail eggs, and French fries with spicy cod roe and mayo sauce. Nick looks pale. "Do you have any, like, plain rice?" he asks the waitress."

"Warren, after four nights of gastrointestinal battle, improbably orders a side of chili. "He just likes the attention," Nick notes.

"Nick blows me away with his one-night stand years ago with a renowned and extremely temperamental diva. They went back to his hotel and got busy. Hungover the next morning, Nick drank the glass of water that was on the night table. Water that contained the diva's contact lens. "She never quite forgave me," he says.

Oh, and there's a disgusting joke Nick tells too...involving incest and, erm...well, anyway...haha.

Most of my videos are short clips, since I didn't realize how AMAZING my memory card was, and I didn't want to spend too much time screwing with videos. I was also RIGHT ON a speaker monitor, so the audio on most of these is pretty horrid. Some of you will be like, WHY even both sharing that; it's awful! Because they're MINE, and that pleases me. Plus, the video quality is spiffy. :)

The Adventures of Grinderbunny!

I AM SO SORRY THIS IS SO LONG. I have more stuff to share, but I'll wait a bit, haha.

I have lots of things to share about the November 27th Grinderman show, but I figured many of you would be wanting to know how the Grinderbunny/thank you's turned out, so I am starting with that.

The Adventures of Grinderbunny!

First of all, THANK YOU so much to everyone who submitted thank you's to be included in this fan project for Nick. I hope you will all be pleased with how things turned out, and let me assure you that Mr. Cave...well...just read on...

After only sleeping two hours the night before (I was WAY too excited), we went to get breakfast, but I really couldn’t eat.

ALL PHOTOS AND VIDEOS BY ME.

Since we brought my brand new camera, we had to take my bag into the restaurant with us. Grinderbunny (a stuffed bunny...The Death of Bunny Munro; get it?) had a mustache and bushy, Cave-like eyebrows. I had taken the thank you’s from fans, folded them into origami crows (of course!), put them into an envelope, and pinned it to Grinderbunny’s back to toss onstage. Anyway, he had to come in because he was in my bag and I did not want ANYTHING to happen to that thing.

Oh, and here are the fan thank you’s, folded into crows (the envelope said, “thank you, Nick. Open the birds” on it.

Grinderbunny is grumpy without his cup o’ joe.

He’s only fifteen inches tall, but he can drive pretty well, actually.

Grinderbunny mugshot? Or just worried about leaving us behind? Don’t be afraid, Bun-Bun. Nick Cave will take care of you.

My husband and I started making Grinderbunny say things in a Nick Cave accent, and this horridly annoying video is the result:

Grinderbunny's MUSTACHE FELL OFF TWICE, but we were able to get some more glue and some tape. Tape? Yes, tape...fail. But I could NOT give Nick the Grinderbunny without the 'stache. But yes, luckily there was a grocery store nearby. Phew.

I knew Nick didn’t play guitar on two of my favorites, which would be played back-to-back, “Honeybee” and “Kitchenette.” I figured I would time The Throw of Grinderbunny between those songs. I was going to try to record a video of The Throw to Nick’s feet as soon as “Honeybee” was over. Therefore, when “Honeybee” began, my heart IMMEDIATELY began pounding like I can’t even explain. I got super light-headed and panicky (I have anxiety anyway). This was when he would either give the Grinderbunny a “WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?!” look, or say, “I don’t have the mustache anymore; let it go!” or something. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT TO EXPECT. So yes. Here is a video clip from “Honeybee”.

Just know that I felt so anxious and panicky during the duration of this song. It’s about my FAVORITE GM song, aaaand knowing The Moment was arriving…stressful:

I’d been trying to hide the bunny from EVERY FAN ALL DAY, by the way. I wanted it to be a surprise for everyone. After the freaking fiasco with the ‘stache falling off, the fact that I didn’t get The Throw recorded isn’t that surprising. My husband should have recorded it, but I told him, “No! I can do it.” Right. Um, NO, Andrea…FAIL.I WAS GOING TO RECORD THE THROW. That was ALWAYS my plan…HOWEVER…somehow, in the excitement…I bumped the “record” button again and recorded NOTHING involving The Throw.

BUT I can tell you what happened pretty exactly.

As soon as “Honeybee” ended, I stopped hiding Grinderbunny and got ready to toss him at Nick’s feet. BUT NICK ENDED THE SONG STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. I looked up at him and HANDED GRINDERBUNNY RIGHT TO HIM. He carried it as he stepped over the monitors, and then turned to face us and BEAMED A HUGE SMILE and LAUGHED. I was NOT expecting him to LAUGH. Then he looked right into my eyes, then back to the bunny, still amused as hell, and said, “THANK YOU! It’s GRINDERBUNNY!”

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! HE TOTALLY DUBBED IT GRINDERBUNNY, JUST LIKE I HAD BEEN REFERRING TO IT ALL ALONG!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!!!!

The envelope our thank you’s were in survived and were still pinned to Grinderbunny, and Nick immediately walked over to Jim’s drums, put Grinderbunny on part of them, and then the band launched into “Kitchenette”.

KITCHENETTE VIDEO CLIP; WATCH FOR THE GRINDERBUNNY!!!

Note the bunny perched just-so on Jim’s drums. At some point the bunny loses a shoe, but not in these:

I just love that Nick is obviously thinking, “awww, they gave me a gift; it’d make them super stoked if I put this on the drums.” BECAUSE IT TOTALLY DID. I WAS FREAKING OUT. YOU HAVE NO IDEA. It was the coolest thing EVER, and I turned to Nick (my Nick) and said, “this almost makes up for not meeting him earlier,” AND IT IS SO TRUE. The Grinderbunny Experience was…AMAZING.

Grinderbunny started tipping precariously due to Jim’s INSANE, BADASS drumming:

The Grinderbunny hung out for awhile, but during "No Pussy Blues," he fell onto one of Jim’s drums 02:31 into the song. Jim tried to keep playing with the bunny there, as you can see. Then he got tossed off the drum and to the floor, where he hung out for the rest of the night.

At 03:20 or so, some girl yells out after Nick says, “she didn’t want to,” “I DO!” and another girl yells, “I DO, TOO!” and he laughs at it and says, “I do, too,” which amuses me to no end. Then he wanted the crowd to clap so the camera gets put down for a bit. Which is cool, cuz you can see how the camera’s jumping around due to the speakers.

Thank you all SO MUCH for taking part in this. I know he will love our thank you's and he was DEFINITELY amused by Grinderbunny. :D

Upcoming Cave Interview Book!

If this new (yet unauthorized) Cave book is anything like the Tom Waits book, Innocent When You Dream, it will be awesome. It sounds like the same thing, which is a book comprised mostly of interviews WITH NICK from throughout the years.

EDIT: Mat Snow is the guy who apparently "Scum" is based on.Because of that, think about if you want him to have your money or not. It's between Cave and Snow, but yeah...

Gonna be honest...the title scares me. Sounds like tabloid fodder. We shall see.

I preordered it; it comes out January 11th and you can preorder it from Amazon HERE. I will let you all know the verdict when I get it, but it sounds good, if it's all past interviews and what-not.

Creepiest Voices in Rock

Through the AMAZING Tom Waits blog, The Eyeball Kid, comes a link that amused me a bit. Both Waits AND Mr. Cave are on the list of the 13 Creepiest Voices in Rock. I find the list mostly "made of fail", as much as I hate that phrase. Really? I don't find their voices creepy so much as BADASS. And the songs they chose as Cave and Waits' "gravest"...come on. Is "The Mercy Seat" the gravest? Surely "Stagger Lee" is creepier? And "Earth Died Screaming" for Waits? Hmm..."Starving in the Belly of a Whale" creeps me out way more.

I will agree with Bjork being on there, for sure. That lady scares the HELL out of me. You know whose voice REALLY scares me, though? Tiny Tim. All the way.

Someone tell me this is a misprint. WHY IS THIS $500?!

P.S. So, am I correct in assuming the updated, gladiator/Grinderman book should be a no? That's cool. I was panic attacking thinking about it anyway, haha. XD

I, however, am waiting on mine to ship over from the UK. I got the CD/vinyl/Grinderman print combination. I REFUSE to hear it on anything other than vinyl for the first time. So shhhhhh. I know there are streams online, but again - I refuse! When I put that needle to the groove, I want it to be the first time I hear those words.

"MICKEY MOUSE & THE GOODBYE MAN"
Nick Cave: Mickey Mouse & The Goodbye Man sets up a kind of narrative that is echoed throughout the songs on the record and it became the first song because it’s there for that reason and also because it’s very direct. It’s a rock n roll song in a strange kind of way and I think it drags people into the record pretty effectively.

"WORM TAMER"
NC: Well, Worm Tamer, for me, is one of the most extraordinary songs I’ve ever been involved in all the years of making music. I’ve never heard anything like it in my life. It’s got a wry kind of lyric to it, but sonically it’s really extraordinary and I can’t really describe it, you just have to kind of hear it. There’s something really mental about it, I think.
Warren Ellis: Worm Tamer is a very dense number. It’s one that’s going to be interesting to play live, I think. It’s the one song that really doesn’t sound like anything I’ve ever heard before. I think it’s very unique-sounding that song. I really love it; that one and Kitchenette, I think, are probably my favourite songs on the album.

"HEATHEN CHILD"
Jim Sclavunos: Heathen Child, which is the first single to be taken off Grinderman 2, is very groovy, infectiously groovy, deeply and profoundly groovy. You might say it’s a predatory groove; but you can bump and grind to it (even if you’re not a predator). You can belly dance to it, assuming you have the right physique. You can even do the huckabuck, if you are particularly agile. I believe it also lends itself to long private episodes in the bathtub… if the video is any evidence.

"EVIL"
JS: The song Evil, I believe, will endure to prove that it has a timeless appeal, very much like the appeal of its subject matter.

"KITCHENETTE"
NC: Well, Kitchenette is kind of a down home, dirty, stoner blues. It’s Warren’s favourite song on the record, I think.
WE: Well yeah, I really love Kitchenette ‘cause it just has such a wonderful loose feel to it and I think it actually feels… For me it’s one of the best vocals I’ve heard Nick do. It’s really so relaxed and the phrasing is fantastic and it just feels like you’re really in a moment with it. You feel like you’re listening to it as it unfolds, which is actually what it is. I really love that song. I could listen to that one song over and over.
JS: The track Kitchenette offers a sobering look at the sordid conditions of modern marriage and family life and the various temptations and disillusionment besetting this institution. And all of this has been set to a relentless, sinister and growling groove.

"WHAT I KNOW"
NC: Once again, that was a piece that was a moment we captured, purely improvised, that was within this period, when we originally recorded stuff, and it was just this really beautiful quiet kind of moment that was had and we just chopped it out and kind of pasted it into the record.
JS: What I Know has a very different feel for Grinderman. It spotlights our more introspective side. I would liken it to a delicate, fragile bauble being caressed by a mesmerized Cro-Magnon.

"BELLRINGER BLUES"
JS: Bellringer Blues is a battlefield hallucination set to stoner funk. It was the sleeper track of the
album and I think it’s a perfect album closer, as it draws the curtains on the troubled affairs of the album with an air of triumphant rapture.

Remember the Eulogy for a Stache fanbook last year? [LINK]

How many of you would be willing to contribute some Gladiator-themed stuff for an updated version, which I will personally give to Cave (sometime during the end of the show while he's on stage) at the Grinderman show?

I want more guys to contribute, seriously. It's supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek fan project, not just OMG! CAVE IS HOT! type thing. Seriously. Eric, it is not just about the 'stache...it is now about flaming farts as well.

Since I scanned last year's book, I can print it out again to be put into an updated SPECIAL EDITION! NOW WITH MORE GLADIATORS! book. I want to make a video of me handing it to Nick, but as I will be beyond terrified that he will look at me strangely or say, "I got the other one" or "oh, so you're that weirdo," I don't know if that will happen, but I will try.

Who would be interested in contributing? If you want a 'stache pic, that's fine, or just words to Nick (keep in mind this will be just a few months after his birthday, so birthday wishes are a go), and Gladiator helmets, etc.

I am buzzed from too fruity beers. What the hell. Let me know!

I stay away from the 'net for awhile, and what happens? THREE newsworthy Cave happenings, I say, and not one of them has to do with the oh-too-soon release of Grinderman's second album.

1. Mr. Cave is planning to take on and write a remake of the movie, The Crow.

2. The Death of Bunny Munro, Cave's second book, is going to be made into a TV mini-series.

My initial thoughts on the above:
I've never seen the original movie of The Crow all the way through, but I can imagine it being something of a travesty to hardcore fans that it may be getting remade. I am interested to see what Cave could do with it, though.

As for Bunny Munro, as someone who liked the book but didn't LOVE it, I would actually really like to see a film of it, since seeing it in another medium may help me come to love the story more. (Ignore the huge sentence.)

My thoughts on the magazine: AWESOME. But if that's a recent picture (I don't think so), he's been subjected to the Photoshopped Hairline Treatment again.

A friend of mine (hi, Lori!) sent me a package a few years ago with this Cave comic taped to it. I totally forgot that I hadn't shared it with you all. I love it. :D

The top ripped off, but obviously the first frame would say, "When I was 12 years old..." This was from a feature in some magazine (SPIN, possibly) called "Real Life Rock Tales." Artists tell their tale, and someone draws it up as a comic. So these ARE Nick's own words, accompanied by artwork from Bryan Talbot. Enjoy! I find it highly amusing, and the frame with Nick and Deanna hiding behind the tree at the church cracks me up for some reason.

I don't know how many of you actually use LiveJournal (I mostly just surf random communities there now), but I'm FINALLY making a Nick Cave mood theme. If YOU use LJ, let me know if you'd be interested in using this. I'm making it regardless, but I'd like to know. :)

Now I remember why I didn't get around to making this ages ago. It takes FOREVER. There are 130 different moods, but some are nested (for example, I'm using the same photo for stressed and rushed).

I can't believe I never shared these here! I have failed you all horribly as a fellow Black Crow Kinglet! I am ashamed to have forgotten to share the wonder of these with you.

I found them on some radio website, and I've been OBSESSED with them for over a year. No, really. The second one was my wallpaper for MONTHS. Well, I edited it so Nick had a Burger King crown, and Robert Downey Jr. in Mickey Mouse ears replaced the guy beside him (NO, REALLY).

Seriously, the photos that end up being my favorites, whether they're pictures of Nick or Tom Waits, tend to be...well...douchey, unprofessional, weird, and random. For example, my favorite picture of Tom Waits EVER is THIS. See what I mean? Totally douchey and hilarious.

Can I be honest here? I actually have that flip-off photo on my phone, and I use it as a wallpaper sometimes. You can't have a bad day looking at Mr. Cave doing that. It's impossible.

Awesome pics of Nick hanging out with the band, Down. It's amazing to me that, with a hat on, Nick looks not much older than he did in The Road to God Knows Where. I think hats may be in his future. ;)

JLP Tribute Album

For those of you who didn't know, Mr. Cave is featured on a new tribute CD for Jeffrey Lee Pierce (former frontman of the Gun Club). The album, entitled We Are Only Riders, features tracks Pierce composed prior to his death. Artists include Mick Harvey, Lydia Lunch, Debbie Harry, The Raveonettes, and others.

Cave and Harry duet on the song "Free to Walk," and Cave also performs "Ramblin' Mind".

The album is out now.
